Case Study #5

Circuit Board Evaluation and Re-design

Problem

A local service company client has contracts to service a certain type of electronic equipment. Some of the equipment is no longer manufactured and is not supported by the OEMs. With multiple systems under contract, the client required a permanent solution.

Solution

Working with the client's repair department, Sector ascertained three distinct situations:
  1. Boards the client was capable of repairing.
  2. Boards with catastrophic failures that must be replaced.
  3. Boards with a previous repair history such that it was impractical to continue to repair them.
For the boards in categories 2 and 3 above, Sector:
  1. Performed a complete evaluation of each board and created schematics, parts list and layout.
  2. Redesigned the PCB to replace obsolete components when necessary.
  3. Re-certified and manufactured the new boards.
  4. Replenished the client's inventory of replacement boards and supplied the client with new drawings so they could continue with their normal repair and replacement business.
